The love between a nanny and a child is a complicated relationship that is often undervalued or overlooked due to the monetary aspect involved. But does that mean the nanny doesn’t love the child, or that they don’t share a genuine relationship? These are some of the questions posed by “Petals,” a kannada short film by Sharath Raysad. The film follows Ajji, a nanny who has cared for a little boy named Ayush since he was a baby and considers him her own. On her last day as his nanny, we witness her struggle to come to terms with this ending while trying to give Ayush the best farewell possible.

From what I can gather, I believe this is directed by a first-time director. If this isn’t his first film, it’s at least one of the first times he is being spotlighted by a major production company. The film was released by Rishab Shetty’s production company.

"Petals" is a heartwarming exploration of the complex relationship between a child and his nanny. Directed by Sharath Raysad, this slice-of-life short film follows Ayush and his Ajji (which means "grandma" in Kannada and is the name Ayush uses to address his nanny) on their last day together as we see Ajji struggle with letting Ayush go.

Hands down, my favorite part of this film is the performance of the actress who portrays Ajji; she is absolutely perfect in that role. Whenever she appeared on screen, it reminded me so much of my grandmother. There is one scene where Ayush and Ajji sit in one of those AR chairs at the mall, where you put on AR visors and experience a simulation. Watching her reactions made me incredibly happy because I could imagine my own grandmother reacting in the same way.

This film addresses the themes of found family versus biological family. Ajji is obviously Ayush's nanny, but you can tell he loves her like family. There is a poignant moment when Ajji asks Ayush who he loves more, her or his mom. He struggles with this question and ultimately says he loves them the same. The film also explores themes of caretakers and boundaries. What is the role of the nanny? Even if they know what is best for the child, should they act on it? Who is truly looking out for the child’s best interests: the parents or the nanny? These are all questions that arise in modern parenthood.

Overall, "Petals" is a beautiful and heartfelt film that will leave you questioning the role of caretakers in a child’s life. This is a must-watch short film if you appreciate commentary on modern society, featuring memorable performances and a unique story.
